Felton's Summer Calendar: Farmers Market, Redwood Mountain Faire, and the Rhythm of the Season
Summer in Felton doesn't announce itself with a single big event the way some towns do. It builds slowly through a handful of small, recurring gatherings that, strung together, end up defining the whole season. If you're new to the valley, or thinking about moving here before next summer, this is roughly what the calendar looks like from where I sit in Felton.
The Weekly Anchor: Felton Farmers Market
The Felton Farmers' Market has been running every Tuesday since 1987, making it the second-longest-running market in the county. It's small enough that you'll recognize the same faces from week to week — the bread guy, the egg family, the kid running the lemonade stand for a school fundraiser — and it's become the informal weekly meetup for a lot of families in town, mine included.
The Big One: Redwood Mountain Faire
Held at Roaring Camp right here in Felton, the Redwood Mountain Faire is the closest thing this valley has to a signature annual festival — a full weekend of live music, local food, and wine and beer from around the region, set in an open field surrounded by redwoods. It draws musicians from across the region, raises money for local service organizations, and manages to stay genuinely family-friendly despite the beer garden, which isn't a combination every festival pulls off.
Riding the Rails
Beyond hosting the Faire, Roaring Camp Railroads runs its own calendar of seasonal events throughout the year right in Felton, and its heritage steam trains are a reliable go-to any weekend you have out-of-town guests who want the quintessential redwoods experience. If you like a bit of friendly competition, the Race Thru the Redwoods brings runners and walkers through Henry Cowell's trails each August, starting and ending near Felton, and it's approachable enough that plenty of families do it together rather than treating it as a serious race.
The Community Ones You Won't Find in a Tourist Guide
The Santa Cruz Mountains Classic Car Show pulls in car enthusiasts and families every summer to raise funds directly for the mountain area's volunteer fire departments — the same departments that show up when a red flag warning turns serious. It's the kind of event where buying a raffle ticket actually funds the truck that might one day protect your street, which is a very Felton way of doing a fundraiser.
