There's something about a movie under redwoods that a theater seat can't touch - blankets on the ground, snacks you actually picked yourself, kids running around in the grass while it's still light out. Outdoor screenings have become one of my favorite summer things up here. And here's the good news I didn't expect when I started digging into this: the valley actually has its own drive-in some seasons - you just have to know where to look.

Most people don't realize how many free or low-cost outdoor movie nights happen within a short drive of Felton, Ben Lomond, and Boulder Creek each summer - Santa Cruz County runs a full slate down the hill.

How to find screenings all summer long
Schedules shift season to season and rarely get promoted beyond word of mouth. Follow San Lorenzo Valley Parks and Recreation and the Santa Cruz County Parks department directly - they post early. Check the Felton, Ben Lomond, and Boulder Creek community Facebook groups, since neighbors share these faster than any official source. And ask at the library - SLV libraries quietly host some of the best free screenings around and nobody hears about them otherwise.
Packing it right - the mountain version
The list is mostly what you'd expect: a blanket or low chairs, bug spray, snacks in a small cooler, glow sticks for the kids who can't sit still before the movie starts. But up here, add one thing to the list that people driving in from the valley floor forget - a real layer for later. Fog moves through the canyon after dark even in July, and it gets cold faster in Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek than it does twenty minutes away in Santa Cruz. If you're heading to a drive-in, bring cash - plenty still don't take cards.
