The Best Parks, Splash Pads, and Kid-Friendly Spots in the Santa Cruz Mountains

One of the first things I do when I'm scoping out a neighborhood for a family buyer is look for the parks. Not just whether they exist, but whether they're the kind of place you'd actually want to spend a Saturday morning. A great park says a lot about a neighborhood. Up here in the mountains, good parks are how families get outside without getting lost on a fire road. Here are some of my favorites in and around the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Parks Worth the Trip

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (near Felton)

What makes it great: Old-growth redwoods, multiple trails for every level, a river you can wade in during summer, shaded picnic areas, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget you're 20 minutes from town.

Best for: Families who want to really be outside, older kids who can handle a moderate hike, anyone who needs to breathe.

Location: Felton area, near Highway 9.

Roaring Camp Railroads (Boulder Creek)

What makes it great: A narrow-gauge railroad that runs through the redwoods (kids go absolutely feral for this), open-air cars, the novelty of an actual train ride, picnic grounds, and a general store.

Best for: Families with kids ages 3 to 10, the kind of outing that feels like an adventure without requiring hiking boots, grandparents who want to spoil the kids.

Location: Boulder Creek, Highway 236.

Big Trees County Park (near Felton)

What makes it great: Redwood trails that are manageable for younger kids, a creek you can splash in, good picnic setup, not as crowded as some of the bigger parks.

Best for: Toddlers and early elementary kids, families who want nature without the big commitment, dogs on leash.

Location: Near Felton, off Highway 9.

Splash Pads and Water Play

Felton Town Pool and Splash Pad (seasonal, summer months)

Open summer months, with a small splash pad for toddlers and a regular pool for older kids. Affordable entry, but it gets crowded on hot weekends, so arrive early.

Location: Felton community area.

Ben Lomond Community Park Water Features (seasonal)

A smaller water play area, less crowded than Felton, still seasonal. Check ahead for hours.

Also worth knowing: Highlands Park in Ben Lomond has river access for swimming during summer months. Beautiful setting, less developed than other parks.

Location: Ben Lomond area.

Bonus Kid-Friendly Spots

A few extras worth bookmarking:

The Picnic Basket (Felton): Local deli and bakery. Kids love the sandwiches, and there's actual seating to eat them. Located in Felton downtown.

Santa Cruz Mountains Discovery Center (Boulder Creek): Indoor exploration space when the weather turns. Good for rainy days.

Lompico Creek Access Points (Lompico): If you're already in Lompico, the creek is beautiful for wading and rock jumping. Water levels are seasonal.

Farmers Markets and Community Events (rotating locations): Felton and Boulder Creek both have seasonal farmers markets, live music, and the kind of Saturday morning energy that gets families outside.

Why This Matters When You're Buying

The best family neighborhoods aren't just about square footage and school zones. They're about what life actually looks like on a Tuesday after school, or a slow Sunday morning. Can you walk to a park? Is there green space your kids can actually get to without a 20-minute drive? What's the vibe of the community around those spaces?

When I'm helping families find the right fit in the Santa Cruz Mountains, we always talk about what's walkable, what's drivable, and what's going to make your kids want to be outside. Because up here, that matters even more than it does in town. Access to nature is part of why you're moving up the mountain in the first place.

If you want to see which neighborhoods put you closest to the spots that matter most to your family, let's talk.
